Sharing is Caring - Episode 3 - Free Printable Weekday Planner

On the cork board in my kitchen I have a monthly planner so that I have an overview of all the appointments for our family in a particular month. I like monthly planners, because when I still was using a weekly planner only, I often got unpleasantly surprised when I turned the pages and found out I had more to do in the upcoming week than I thought. The monthly overview gives me a better impression of what's coming up.

A new look for the website

Maybe you've noticed it already, especially when you visited the homepage, but The Dutch Lady Designs has a new website layout. And surprisingly enough it is not one of my own Blogger templates.

It was time for something really new and therefore I decided to go with a template from Pipdig. I worked with a template from this UK based design company before for my Wordpress blog and while I did not fall in love with the whole Wordpress thing, I got smitten with the template I was using. So I have purchased the same template I was using on Wordpress, but this one is made for Blogger.

The homepage is really the eyecatcher here and I had been looking to add some kind of a 'landing page' to my blog that would display a grid of the latest post images. With Blogger you just don't see that many well working templates that have this feature. But this one has and I'm so happy with it! The installation instructions that come with the template are very clear, but Pipdig even allows you to use their free installation service if you wish. The templates are a bit pricier than the premade Blogger templates you will find on Etsy, but sometimes it is just worth it to invest a little more in your blog and business.

Of course this new look will probably result in some emails from people with the request if I can design a similar blog for them with the landing page and photo grid. But I have to disappoint you all here. The fact that I sell premade Blogger templates does not mean that I am a brilliant web designer that can bring any idea to life in the virtual world. I am a graphic designer that knows enough about website coding that I can make a simple, basic Blogger template work.

In my premade designs the emphasis is on the (watercolor) graphics that are blended into the design to give an elegant, feminine look. The templates work very well, but are mainly targeted at women that want to write blog stories in the first place. The templates have a basic framework to which I add style features. You can see the framework of a website as a dressboy. I use the same dressboy for all my Blogger templates, but hang different clothes on each one to style them different ;-) In order to add a landing page or a slider that skeleton would have to be changed in a big way, and that is just not my forte.

So if you are looking for a Blogger template that can do a bit more than only show stories on the homepage, you might want to check out Pipdig, I highly recommend them. And welcome to the new looking The Dutch Lady Designs! It's always a pleasure to have you here.

How to add a Goodreads widget to your Blogger sidebar

With the smell of Autumn in the air lots of people like to spend more time crawled up on their couch with a good book in hand. I love to read myself, although I'm not a very fast reader. I think my life will be too short to read every book that is on my wish-to-read list since that list keeps growing every day, especially since I signed up to Goodreads.

Through my work of selling premade Blogger templates I found out how big the book loving community amongst bloggers actually is. It is huge! And through these dedicated booklovers and bloggers I got familiar with Goodreads, a social platform for book addicts.

How to choose the right font for your logo

I recently got a message from one of my clients that bought a premade logo design from me for her photography business. She actually bought my best selling design and was in love with the font type. But when she started to use the logo on her photos she found out that the very thin, elegant font she fell in love with was not working out for her. She asked me for advice on what to do. We looked at other font options but finally she decided she wanted to stick with the thin font because she liked it so much. I was able to give her tips on how to make the logo stand out more on her photos so that the logo wasn't only beautiful but also practical. And that got me thinking about writing a post about the subject of selecting the right font type for your logo. There are some things you want to think about before purchasing a premade or a custom made logo design.

My personal thoughts on influencers

For a person that creates blog templates herself I'm actually quite a digital fossil. Especially when it comes to social media I'm still living under a rock. The whole thing is just not my cup of tea so to speak. It could be my age, but it's probably more a personality trait. I find social media to be really overwhelming. That's why you won't find me on Facebook or Twitter, but I have a personal account on Instagram. The account is more for myself, to play with photography, and just collect some visual memories. If people like to follow along, please feel welcome, but I personally don't care if I have 5 followers or 5000.

Sharing is Caring - Episode 2 - Free Watercolor Dot Clipart

Time for a little sharing the love! Today I'm sharing a set of 4 watercolor circle images that can be used for all kinds of projects. Since we're heading into Fall I have given them colors that remind me of the beginning of that season. When the yellow of Summer can still be found, but when browns and purples are making their entrance.

My struggle with custom design work

Summer was long and hot over here in the Netherlands. The heat and the enormous amounts of sunshine did great things for my tomato plants in the backyard, but they also diminished my desire to get behind the computer and write blog posts. But with Fall slowly making it's presence known I got some new inspiration again for blog articles. One thing that has been on my mind for a while is how I struggle with custom design work. While this blog post is going to be about my personal experience with it, it might help other business owners to decide whether or not they want to offer custom services or not. Here's my personal take on things.
