Starting a Wordpress blog - Follow me on my journey

September 5, 2016

The people that have been following along with this blog and my Etsy shops might raise their eyebrows seeing this post's title. I mean, a Wordpress blog? Wasn't I the girl that was into Blogger blogs? After all I am creating and selling premade Blogger templates on Etsy and this website is built on Blogger as well. So what's going on?

Well, it is that time of year again, the beginning of Fall, and that always comes with new ideas for me. As some of you might know I have had a couple of personal blogs through the years but never really managed to keep them going. Despite those failures the whole personal blogging thing always kept being present in the back of my mind. I still longed to create a place where I could vent my thoughts, share my story and just keep track of life in general. By keeping a personal blog I would be able to chronicle the lives of my loved ones as well. It would be nice to have some visual memories stored somewhere. So when the blogging itch hit me again recently, I decided to go big with my ideas in an effort not to let this blog die a silent death as well.

So I signed up for a self-hosted Wordpress blog. Self-hosted Wordpress blogs are not free like a Blogger blog. You basically pay a yearly hosting fee to a hosting company to offer you hosting space on their server for your website. I signed up with Bluehost as my server company and the hosting plan I bought included a domain name.

I also bought a nice Wordpress Template to go with it. I could have used one of the free templates that Wordpress offers its users but decided I wanted it to look really nice. Spending money on hosting services and a template are hopefully the kick in the butt I need to finally keep up with a personal blog. I want this blog to succeed. Maybe not so much in numbers of readers and followers, but more so for myself. To finally have some images of my family, our lives and the things we love. To have stories to read back when we grow older, and maybe, most of all, to have a place to express myself and feel comfortable about it.

So I worked a big part of the weekend on setting up things, installing the template, getting to know the template and writing my first post. It wasn't totally new to me. In 2013 I had a self-hosted Wordpress recipe blog, so I was familiar with the Wordpress dashboard and things like 'plugins'. But still, it is definitely different from Blogger, so I have a lot of learning to do. And that is the reason why I am sharing the news of my new blog here.

I thought it would be a good idea to write a blog post series on my experiences with starting my Wordpress blog. From the choice to go with a self-hosted Wordpress blog, selecting a hosting company, buying a template, to installing everything and just basically figuring out the platform. It might be a nice way for people that are playing with the idea of starting their own self-hosted Wordpress blog to see if this would be something for them before they decide on a blogging platform or to spend money on a blog.

So in the upcoming weeks I will be sharing my self-hosted Wordpress journey with you all. And if you can't wait for next post, here's the link to my new personal blog: www.lifeasdaphne.com. Should you be interested in following along with my personal stories, there is the option to follow along with Bloglovin. I am having a little trouble linking my blog to my Bloglovin profile, but hopefully that will be taken care of in a couple of days. In the meantime you can subscribe to my new blog on Bloglovin via this link.

Let's start this new and exciting journey!
